Decorating Your Home with Pictures

We watched snowflakes dance from the sky onto the tall pines from our high rise condo.  We spent the first 7 years of our marriage in southeastern Ontario.

My first visit (engaged), I commented, "Look at all of the Christmas trees you have up here!"  His response, "We just call them trees."  Towering White Spruce Trees were never a part of my Florida horticultural experience.

During that first year, I experimented in the kitchen.  Eagerly, I awaited his arrival home to taste my newest recipe.  He gratefully ate anything set before him.  Until one night.  The Coq Au Vin disaster.  That was not edible.

My home decor notebook began from clipped pieces of magazines and flyers.  We would spend an entire evening walking the floors of IKEA.  Getting lost in our future home decor dreams.  Then, carefully picking out what we actually needed, using gifted money from our wedding day.

We started life together with a black and cream living space, faux black leather couch and a rock hard futon.  We found bamboo blinds on sale and placed paper IKEA lamps in strategic corners.  Before moving I spray-painted wooden letters black for "EBY", to hang on the wall.

We had a tropical plant, we named him "Palmer".  Poor little guy didn't last too long before some kind of disease took him away.

Those early days of designing your home together are full of excitement.  The bank account runs a little dry, but the ideas and enthusiasm are rich.  I wouldn't trade those early days for anything.  They built our marriage to what it is today.

I still decorate my home with pictures.  My little ones love seeing them and asking questions.  I smile whenever I pass by.  They are my best art investment.

As you make your inspiration boards for your home together, remember to incorporate all of those memories you have captured on camera.  Here are a few ideas to get you started...

Matted Frames

There are many beautiful ways to print and hang your images.  My favorite method is a large gallery wall with thick matted frames.  The bigger the matting, the better.  Give me all the negative space.

You can find fabulous frames like these at Pottery Barn, Hobby Lobby, Michael's, and Home Goods.

Collage Wall

Collage walls are my favorite.  A playful way of mixing materials to create a gallery full of various art forms.  Hand lettering, watercolor, portrait, and metal hangings for a more lifelike feeling.

Choose one of your favorite pieces of art, then find an image that compliments the mood of that piece.  A few of my fave places to find other complimenting pieces of art are:

Home Goods, Antique Stores, Hobby Lobby, Heirlooms passed down in my family, Rifle Paper Co., and Etsy.

Wedding Memorabilia

Archive a copy of your invitation suite, save-the-dates, and paper goods.  You never know how you might incorporate them into your decor.

All of those hand lettering pieces?  Frame them or find a way to hang them and incorporate them into a collage.  That includes custom maps, watercolor, or anything designed for the wedding day.

One of my favorite new trends is commissioning a custom illustration of your bridal gown.  Do it before the wedding and you can incorporate it into your design.

You put a lot of effort into choosing your decor and signage, why not incorporate that into your home space?

Guestbook Art

Sometimes you wonder if these Pinterest trends will stand the test of time.

This is an idea that I found for my wedding - waaaay back in 2006.  It still hangs in my house, above my grandmother's vintage typewriter.  I'm so happy we opted for this non-traditional guestbook.  The black and white contributes to the timelessness of this piece.

Every time I walk by I remember that day when Ben and I started our family.  I also read the names of those surrounding us on that day, people who will never all be under one roof again.  It was that day, that moment in time that we all celebrated.

When I go teach about what I do for a living, I always bring this picture.  To me, it represents the "why" of my profession.  That tangible legacy of the promises we make to build our future together.

Album Design - Curating Your Wedding Images

A walk through wedding album design. Tips on selecting the right images to showcase.

After the bouquets wilt, the cake is eaten, after the make-up smudges and the music fades, your memories alone remain.  Wedding day memories live on in your heart and come alive once more through images.

One way to keep those memories alive is through a Luxury Album.  This is a high quality, layflat design printed on thick, true photographic, paper.

Most of my couples choose collections with a Luxury Album and that always makes me super happy.  I love seeing wedding memories gracing heirloom pages.  These last for generations to come.

The only hard part is selecting your fave images.  I know, it's a good problem to have, but it's still a challenge.

Here are some tips to help you curate your images for a timeless wedding gift to yourself.

Image Selection

Your luxury wedding album is the high end art gallery of your day.

An art gallery wall covered in paintings quickly becomes overwhelming to the eye.  Negative space and simplicity make for the most beautiful design work.  I recommend selecting between 45-70 images for your album.

Be super picky, choosing only the very best images.  Remember, you can always make a different book that shares all of the images.  Organize your images into “must haves” and “maybes”, then go back and edit any images that just don’t fit.

Client albums include 30 pages, or 15 spreads.  A page is one side of the album, Two pages equal one layflat album spread.  Additional pages may be purchased.

Tell Your Story

Use the images to tell the story of your day.

Start at the beginning of your photography coverage.  Usually, this is in those moments of preparation.  Do a mix of styled items and photojournalistic images.  For example, you could pair images of your shoes and invitation suite with your mother lacing up your gown.  Include any fun bridesmaid images like if you wear matching robes.

When I design your album with the image selection, I will balance spreads between chronological order and color palette as well as mood.

This is a typical design break-down:

Selecting Your Album Cover and Lettering

Incorporate the design of your wedding day and what textiles best represent that overall look. Did you have gilded details?  Then consider gold lettering.  If you aren’t sure, simply ask your photographer for advice.

The album design choices for my clients may be accessed in the Album Design Suite.

Proofing Your Album

Once your album has been designed, I send a proof of the album layout.  This is your chance to ensure accuracy.  Consider any necessary changes (double-check spelling, dates, and all layout designs).

List any changes that you wish to be made, include the album page (or spread) number.  Specify the requested change with as much detail as possible.  Most photographers only allow one complimentary round of edits, as these can be quite time intensive.

Completion

Now you simply wait as your gorgeous wedding art gallery is printed!

I use a company called Redtree Albums.  They work only with professional photographers using the most beautiful textiles and materials.  It typically ships within about 4-6 weeks.  It is well worth the wait!

If you still feel stuck, remember, your photographer is your in-house expert.  You can always choose your "top ten" and then allow your photographer to fill in the rest.

The dreamiest results happen when a client can trust the photographer.  Remember, we want your images to look as beautiful as possible.  We're a team!

Cocktail Hour Wedding Photography Tips

When Ben and I started dating, we had a very different approach to the relationship.  I felt like we needed to read every relationship book, talk about expectations, and set boundaries.  Ben would just laugh it off.  It’s not that he didn’t care about the relationship, he just didn’t care about following a rule book.

While Ben is a man of tremendous integrity, he’s not one for following the rules for rules sake.  I, on the other hand, am a "people pleaser" and avoid trouble, even if it means following silly rules.

This is why Ben is so good for me.  He lightens me up, and I make him read books and follow silly rules every once in awhile.  This is one of the many ways that our opposites attract.

Just like Ben, modern weddings are breaking silly rules like crazy.  Personally, I love it.

If you don’t care for a stuffy reception of caviar and champagne, then break out the giant Jenga or pastel darts.  Fill the day with custom fun.

This new style of entertaining guests helps with mingling.  It also avoids the awkward conversations with strangers around the bar.

How to plan your Cocktail Hour Wedding Photography. How to break rules to create fun for your guests. | Debra Eby Photography Co.

Immediately following the ceremony, your guests transition to cocktail hour.  This is a time of mingling, refreshments, and sometimes even entertainment.

During the first 20 minutes, family will be taking a few portraits.  As long as everyone is present and ready, this shouldn’t take up too much valuable time.

If you had a “first look”, you are free to go enjoy time with your guests, or sneak away for a private time of refreshment.  If you opt out of a “first look”, then your bridal party and you will continue on with portraits for the duration of cocktail hour.

Something to be aware of, if there is no second shooter and there is no “first look”, there will not be any cocktail hour coverage.

Aesthetic

Cocktail hours, as with most parts of a wedding, have evolved greatly.  Lounge areas are now popular, with cozy seating areas.  Pinterest is brimming with ideas from other weddings.

I love capturing a wide angle look of your cocktail hour set-up, then I go in for close ups of each detail you carefully put into your day.  I capture any signature cocktails, even trays of food circulating.

Candid Images

Once I have the overall look of your cocktail hour, I find natural groupings of guests and request to take a picture.  I find this works much better than rapid-fire candids where guests have awkward posture and chewing shrimp.  Everyone feels better when given a chance to pose a little.

If you are mingling, feel free to grab a few friends and family for spontaneous portraits.

Entertainment

If there is live music, guests playing games (like cornhole), or any other form of activity going on, I will be sure to capture this as well.

  • Research interactive wedding games on Pinterest and then customize the playing pieces for your wedding brand.
  • Live music is another way to create a beautiful guest experience.
  • Create guestbook fun with polaroids or other creative custom signing options.
  • Bring in an artist to paint the setting or a caricature artist for a more interactive experience.
  • Make food fun with a popcorn or donut bar.

All of these pieces of your day tell the story of your couple brand.

Be a wedding rule breaker.  Find ways to customize your wedding day, filling it with all you love best.

Now, onward to the reception celebration.
